A 28-year-old man who was critically injured after being stabbed during a violent altercation in Jharkhand's Jamshedpur has died while undergoing treatment, triggering widespread protests and raising serious concerns over policing and public safety in the industrial city. The deceased, identified as Himanshu Singh, was allegedly attacked after he and another man intervened during an incident outside a bar in the Bistupur police station area on Saturday night. His death on Monday evening sparked public outrage, with residents accusing the police of negligence and demanding strict action against those responsible.
According to police, Himanshu Singh and another man, Pratiyush, were involved in an incident linked to the alleged harassment of women outside a bar. A police patrol team reportedly reached the scene and took both men into a patrol vehicle. Investigators allege that a group of accused later dragged the two men out of the police vehicle before attacking them with sharp weapons. While Himanshu succumbed to his injuries during treatment, Pratiyush remains in critical condition at Tata Main Hospital. Police have registered an FIR against ten people, including the owner of the bar, in connection with the case.
Following a departmental inquiry, four policemen were suspended for alleged negligence after CCTV footage and other evidence indicated lapses in the response of the patrol team. Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren also ordered major administrative changes, removing East Singhbhum Senior Superintendent of Police Piyush Pandey and Seraikela-Kharswan Superintendent of Police Nidhi Dwivedi from their posts. Both officers were reassigned to police headquarters, while senior officials were instructed to remain in the region and monitor the law-and-order situation on a daily basis.

News of Himanshu Singh's death led to massive protests across Jamshedpur, with hundreds of people blocking roads at the busy Bistupur roundabout for more than six hours. Protesters burned tyres, disrupted traffic, and alleged that police had failed to arrest the main accused despite detaining two suspects. During the demonstration, the vehicle of the city's Superintendent of Police was allegedly damaged when officials attempted to persuade protesters to end the blockade. Heavy police deployment was later made across the area to prevent further escalation.
The victim's family strongly rejected the police's version of events, claiming Himanshu had been trying to pacify a dispute rather than protesting alleged harassment. His father, Arvind Kumar Singh, alleged that police officers watched silently while attackers pulled his son from the patrol vehicle and assaulted him. The family has demanded capital punishment for those responsible, a murder case against the policemen present during the attack, and a government job for Himanshu's wife. Himanshu was also serving as the president of the Karni Sena's Seraikela-Kharswan district committee.
The incident has intensified political criticism over the law-and-order situation in Jharkhand. Opposition leaders, including BJP representatives and Union Minister Arjun Munda, alleged that the attack exposed a complete breakdown of policing, questioning how assailants could allegedly drag victims from a police vehicle and carry out a fatal assault. Jamshedpur West MLA Saryu Roy also held the police accountable, calling the incident a serious failure of law enforcement. Investigations are continuing, while authorities face growing public pressure to arrest all accused and ensure accountability for both the attackers and officials accused of negligence.
