Delhi Police have invoked serious charges, including culpable homicide not amounting to murder, following the death of a senior finance ministry official in a road accident near Delhi Cantonment metro station on Sunday afternoon. The incident, which occurred around 1:30 p.m. on Ring Road near metro pillar number 67, involved a BMW SUV ramming into the motorcycle of Navjot Singh, a 52-year-old deputy secretary in the Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance. Singh, a Central Secretariat Service (CSS) cadre officer from Hari Nagar, was en route home with his wife after visiting Bangla Sahib Gurdwara and lunch at Karnataka Bhavan when the collision hurled their vehicle into the central verge and subsequently into a bus.
Eyewitnesses reported that a woman was driving the BMW, with her husband as co-passenger, when it struck the motorcycle from behind at high speed, causing the luxury vehicle to overturn and disrupt traffic on the busy Dhaula Kuan-Delhi Cantt stretch. The Gurugram-based couple, involved in manufacturing leather products like saddles and belts, also sustained injuries. All four victims were rushed by the car's occupants to Nuelife Hospital in GTB Nagar, approximately 17 km from the site, where Singh was declared dead on arrival; his wife remains in critical condition. Singh's son alleged delays in reaching a nearby facility may have worsened outcomes.
A case was registered at Delhi Cantt police station under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections 105 (culpable homicide), 281 (rash driving), 125B (endangering life), and 238 (destroying evidence or giving false information). Both vehicles have been seized, and the scene was forensically examined by crime and FSL teams. Statements from the injured BMW occupants, still under treatment, are pending, as police probe potential speeding or negligence.
