In a major anti-narcotics operation, Assam Police confiscated illegal drugs worth approximately ₹5.93 crore in two coordinated raids and arrested three suspects, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on 27–28 February 2026. The crackdown, carried out in parts of Guwahati and Patharkandi, underscores the state government’s intensified campaign against drug trafficking and distribution networks.
Police discovered 83,399 Yaba tablets — a methamphetamine-based stimulant that is banned in India — and 10 kg of ganja (cannabis) during the operations, officials said. The seizures took place in Paschim Boragaon in the Kamrup Metropolitan district and in Patharkandi in the Sribhumi district, with the contraband’s estimated street value reaching nearly ₹6 crore.
Chief Minister Sarma described the blitz as part of a sustained drive to dismantle drug trafficking routes, posting on social media that the dual operations delivered “one message: from highways to homes, nowhere to hide for drug traffickers.” He commended the Assam Police, Guwahati Police, and Patharkandi police teams for their coordinated efforts in both seizures.

The authorities have initiated further investigations to map out larger trafficking networks and identify any additional individuals involved in the distribution and supply chain. Assam has seen a series of high-value drug busts in recent months, with earlier confiscations, such as hidden Yaba caches inside vehicle compartments, highlighting the ingenuity of smugglers and the challenges faced by law enforcement.
Yaba tablets pose significant public health and safety risks due to their highly addictive nature and methamphetamine content. Their smuggling into northeastern India has been a persistent concern for state and national authorities, prompting stricter enforcement under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and allied laws. The current seizures likely disrupt distribution networks that extend beyond Assam into neighbouring regions.
As Assam reinforces its anti-narcotics posture, the government’s messaging reflects a zero-tolerance stance against traffickers and an emphasis on proactive policing across urban and rural corridors. Senior officials have reiterated their commitment to coordinating with central agencies to clamp down on drug smuggling and associated criminal activities throughout the state.
