The Tamil Nadu Police have downgraded the security cover provided to former chief minister and DMK president M.K. Stalin from the Z+ category to the Z category following a periodic assessment of the threat perception surrounding protected political leaders, officials said. The decision was taken after a detailed review of security arrangements and intelligence inputs concerning Stalin's protection requirements. The reassessment was conducted by the Core Cell Security Wing at the Tamil Nadu Secretariat. Chief Secretary Sai Kumar, Home Secretary K. Manivasan, Director General of Police Mahesh Kumar Aggarwal and other senior officials participated in the exercise.

The review considered intelligence inputs, the nature and immediacy of potential threats, Stalin's public exposure, travel patterns and the level of protection required during his movements and engagements. Security cover for VIPs and VVIPs in Tamil Nadu is reassessed every six months as part of the state's regular security review mechanism. Such assessments are intended to ensure that the level of protection provided to individuals corresponds with the latest available threat information. Security categories can therefore be revised when authorities determine that circumstances have changed or that a different deployment pattern is appropriate.

Under the revised arrangement, Stalin will continue to receive substantial police protection despite the reduction from Z+ to Z category. Officials said security personnel will continue to be deployed across the front, core and rear segments of his convoy. The arrangement will include pilot, escort, backup and close-protection vehicles to provide security while he travels or attends public programmes. The exact number of police personnel assigned to Stalin under the revised arrangement has not been disclosed. Authorities have maintained that the change represents a rationalisation of the existing security deployment rather than a withdrawal of protection. The continued deployment of multiple security components indicates that the former chief minister will remain under a significant protection arrangement.

The decision comes amid the routine review process followed by Tamil Nadu authorities for political leaders and other individuals receiving enhanced security. Security assessments take into account changing circumstances rather than being permanent classifications. Intelligence agencies and police authorities can recommend adjustments when new information indicates that an individual's threat perception has changed. Officials said the new security arrangement will remain in force until the next scheduled assessment, unless fresh intelligence leads authorities to conduct an earlier review.

This means Stalin's security category could be reassessed before the six-month cycle if there is a significant change in the threat environment or new inputs concerning his safety. The downgrade from Z+ to Z therefore does not mean that Stalin has been left without enhanced protection. Instead, authorities have adjusted the scale and structure of his security deployment following their latest assessment. The Tamil Nadu Police will continue to monitor the threat perception and protection requirements of the DMK president, with the possibility of further changes if intelligence inputs or circumstances warrant an earlier review.
