The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is expected to finalise its alliance deal with the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) for the upcoming Assam Assembly elections by March 10, 2026, according to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Speaking to reporters in Guwahati on Friday, February 27, 2026, Sarma indicated that seat-sharing discussions within the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) are progressing, with the BJP aiming for full seat-sharing with its key regional ally AGP wherever possible.
Sarma expressed a preference for 100% seat adjustment but noted that in constituencies where both parties have strong claims and no consensus is reached, "friendly contests" would be allowed—meaning both could field candidates without it affecting the overall alliance unity. "It will be fine if either BJP or AGP wins," Sarma said, emphasizing that the priority remains an NDA victory in such seats.
The BJP has already nearly completed arrangements with other allies, including the Bodoland People's Front (BPF) led by Hagrama Mohilary—described as "more or less finalised" by February 26—and the Rabha Joutho Sangram Samiti. Sarma set March 10 as the revised target date for sealing the AGP pact, following earlier optimism that the deal was imminent. He attributed minor delays partly to ongoing Rajya Sabha election processes and the need for careful negotiations to accommodate grassroots strengths of regional partners.

The Assam Assembly, with 126 seats, is due for polls likely in April-May 2026. The BJP currently holds 64 seats, bolstered by allies including AGP (nine seats), United People's Party Liberal (UPPL, seven seats), and BPF (three seats) in the ruling coalition. The alliance strategy aims to consolidate anti-opposition votes amid competition from the Congress-led INDIA bloc and other regional outfits. AGP leaders, including Cabinet Minister Keshab Mahanta, have indicated that final candidate selections—including a focus on younger faces—will follow once seat-sharing is confirmed.
This development signals intensified preparations by the ruling NDA ahead of the polls, with the BJP launching outreach programmes in the state starting Saturday. The finalisation by March 10 is seen as crucial for unified campaigning and avoiding internal frictions that could benefit the opposition. Authorities and party workers are gearing up for what is expected to be a keenly contested election in the northeastern state.
