A horrifying incident in Krishna district, Andhra Pradesh, has left the community in shock after a mother allegedly killed her 45-day-old premature infant, citing emotional distress caused by her mother-in-law’s taunts. The tragedy occurred on January 2 in Venkatapuram under Mopidevi mandal. Police confirmed that the mother, Veeramachaneni Sai Chaitanya, and her mother-in-law, Vani, have been arrested and sent to remand.
According to authorities, the infant was born prematurely, requiring extensive medical care that cost the family hundreds of thousands of rupees. Despite the financial burden, Chaitanya’s mother-in-law reportedly mocked both the baby’s fragile health and the monetary strain, causing significant emotional pressure on the young mother.
Police reports indicate that Chaitanya, unable to confide in her husband and distressed by the persistent mental torment, decided to end her child’s life. She allegedly strangled the infant and disposed of the body in a nearby water pit. Initially, she claimed the baby was missing but later confessed during police questioning.

Circle Inspector Eswara Rao stated that the mother expressed overwhelming guilt and grief during her confession. “She said she was distressed by the child’s illness and constant taunting from her mother-in-law, which compelled her to take this tragic step,” Rao explained. The police have registered a formal case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.
The incident has sparked outrage among residents and highlighted the severe psychological impact of familial pressure and societal expectations on mothers, especially in cases involving premature births. Authorities are also investigating the role of the mother-in-law in aggravating the mental distress of the young mother.
Both women are currently in judicial custody as the investigation continues. Legal experts warn that this case could draw significant attention to the mental health challenges faced by women under family and societal pressure, emphasizing the urgent need for awareness and support systems for new mothers.
