The Surrey Coroner’s Office has confirmed that Sunjay Kapur, former chairman of Sona BLW Precision Forgings (Sona Comstar), died of natural causes on June 12, 2025, during a polo match in London. The coroner’s report, shared with his wife Priya Sachdev Kapur, cited left ventricular hypertrophy and ischemic heart disease as the causes, effectively ending speculation of foul play raised by Kapur’s mother, Rani Kapur. The investigation has been discontinued under Section 4 of the Coroners and Justice Act 2009, with no inquest required.

Rani Kapur, in a letter to UK authorities dated July 24, 2025, alleged “credible and concerning evidence” of a “transnational conspiracy” involving murder, fraud, and forged documents, implicating individuals who stood to gain financially, including Priya Sachdev Kapur. She claimed her son’s death was “suspicious” and linked to forged asset transfers, urging a criminal probe involving UK, Indian, and US agencies. Sources close to Priya Sachdev Kapur called Rani’s claims “bewildering,” noting the coroner’s findings were shared with her days earlier.

The controversy intensified a family feud over the ₹30,000 crore Sona Group. Rani, claiming to be the majority shareholder via a 2015 will from her late husband Surinder Kapur, demanded the postponement of Sona Comstar’s July 25 AGM, which appointed Priya as a non-executive director with 99.4% shareholder approval. Sona Comstar refuted Rani’s claims, stating she has held no shares or role since 2019, with Sunjay as the sole beneficiary of the RK Family Trust, controlling a 28.02% stake through Aureus Investments Pvt Ltd.

Sunjay, a US citizen with a $1.2 billion net worth, left behind Priya, their son Azarius, stepdaughter Safira, and children Samaira and Kiaan from his previous marriage to Karisma Kapoor. The company appointed Jeffery Mark Overly as chairman on June 23, 2025, amid the ongoing succession dispute. Rani’s emotional plea for “closure” and her legal team’s pursuit of justice signal a protracted battle over the family’s legacy.
