India’s aviation authorities have ordered a detailed technical examination of a Boeing 787 fuel control switch after an Air India aircraft was grounded over a reported malfunction, marking a precautionary step aimed at ensuring continued flight safety. The component will be sent to the United States for specialized laboratory analysis by the manufacturer, according to official sources.
The issue surfaced when an Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner, registered VT-ANX, was taken out of service after a pilot recorded a defect in the aircraft’s Pilot Defect Report. The report noted that the left fuel control switch moved from the “RUN” position to “CUTOFF” when lightly pressed and did not remain securely locked in place, raising concerns about its reliability under normal operational conditions.
Following the report, the airline conducted inspections and functional tests in line with recommendations from the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM). The process was overseen by officials from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to ensure compliance with established safety procedures. Authorities later decided to forward the component to the manufacturer’s facility in the United States for deeper technical investigation.

During testing, officials observed that the switch remained stable when force was applied correctly along the base plate. However, it could shift positions when external pressure was applied at an incorrect angle, with authorities noting that the design of the switch’s base plate could allow unintended movement under improper handling conditions.
The Ministry of Civil Aviation stated that all procedures were carried out strictly according to OEM-prescribed guidelines. The inspection and testing were part of a broader safety verification process to ensure that aircraft systems remain airworthy and meet regulatory standards, especially in light of increased scrutiny of Boeing 787 components.
The development comes amid heightened attention to the safety of Boeing 787 operations following past incidents involving Air India aircraft. Authorities emphasized that the current action is preventive in nature, aimed at strengthening oversight and preventing potential risks before they affect flight operations.
