Indian batter Sarfaraz Khan shared a cryptic social media message on Friday after being left out of the squad for the forthcoming two-Test series against Sri Lanka. Posting an image from the 2019 Telugu film Jersey, he wrote, “I may not fit in, but I’ll fight with everything I’ve got,” prompting discussion among cricket supporters.
Sarfaraz did not explicitly connect the post to his omission from the Indian team. However, its timing drew attention because he has not represented the country in a Test since playing against New Zealand in November 2024. His continued absence from national and India A squads has become a subject of debate despite his strong first-class record.
The Mumbai batter has accumulated 371 runs from six Tests, including one century and three half-centuries. He also holds a first-class batting average of 64.73 across 62 matches. Those numbers have prompted supporters to question why the 28-year-old is apparently no longer among the leading contenders for a place in India’s middle order.

Sarfaraz scored 150 in the opening Test against New Zealand, providing one of India’s few positive performances during a historic 3-0 home series defeat. However, he struggled in his remaining innings and registered a highest score of only 11. He later travelled with the Indian squad for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia but did not play.
His exclusion from the India A squad that faced South Africa A before the senior team’s two-Test series also raised questions about his position in the selection hierarchy. India subsequently lost the Test series against South Africa 2-0. Selectors have not provided a detailed public explanation linking Sarfaraz’s recent omissions to any specific concern.
India are currently playing a three-day warm-up match in Colombo as part of their preparations for the Sri Lanka series. The first Test will begin in Galle on August 15, while the second will be staged at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo. Sarfaraz’s message suggests that he remains determined to work towards another opportunity at the international level.
