In a tactical masterclass during the IPL 2026 clash, Riyan Parag revealed how Sanju Samson was strategically trapped and dismissed early in the match between Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings. Making his full-time captaincy debut, Parag showcased sharp game awareness by planning Samson’s dismissal well in advance. The Royals executed the plan perfectly, restricting Samson to just 6 runs off 7 balls before he was clean bowled by Nandre Burger.
Speaking after the match, Parag explained that the strategy was built by closely observing Samson’s approach in the first few deliveries. Having played alongside him for years, Parag understood his tendencies and preferred shot selections. He noted that the initial three to four balls were crucial in setting the trap, as they gave the team clarity on how Samson was reacting. Based on this, the field placements and bowling plans were adjusted to force Samson into playing a risky shot.
Parag admitted that even the boundary scored by Samson was part of the broader plan, as it encouraged him to attempt a similar stroke again under pressure. The idea was to make Samson uncomfortable by denying him his natural scoring options, especially avoiding deliveries that would allow him to play his favoured attacking shots like the pull. Instead, the bowlers targeted areas that tempted him into playing against his strengths.

The RR skipper further revealed that the exact shot Samson got out to was premeditated. The team deliberately avoided bowling short, knowing Samson’s strength in handling such deliveries, and instead pushed him towards attempting a different stroke. This calculated risk paid off as Samson mistimed his shot, leading to his dismissal at a crucial stage of the innings.
Reflecting on the gamble, Parag acknowledged that such strategies don’t always work and depend heavily on execution. He candidly added that had the plan failed, it could have backfired badly, but when it succeeds, it highlights the importance of preparation and understanding opposition players. His leadership debut thus stood out as a blend of insight, courage, and precise execution on the field.
