Vietnamese electric vehicle (EV) powerhouse VinFast officially launched its state-of-the-art assembly plant at the SIPCOT Industrial Park in Thoothukudi, marking a significant milestone in its global expansion strategy. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin inaugurated the facility alongside VinFast Asia CEO Pham Sanh Chau, with the ceremonial rollout of the premium VF7 electric SUV. The CM personally signed the first vehicle off the production line, symbolizing the strong partnership between VinFast and the Tamil Nadu government.
The Thoothukudi plant, sprawling across 400 acres, is VinFast’s third operational manufacturing facility and the fifth in its global network, underscoring India’s growing importance as the world’s third-largest automobile market. With an initial investment of ₹4,000 crore and plans to scale up to ₹16,000 crore, the facility is designed to produce 50,000 vehicles annually, with the potential to ramp up to 150,000 units. The project is expected to create 3,000–3,500 local jobs, boosting employment and economic growth in the region.

The plant will produce a range of electric vehicles, including SUVs and sedans, tailored to meet the demands of the Indian market while adhering to global quality standards.
