A 25-year-old man, Amrinder Singh, was arrested in west Delhi’s Moti Nagar on Sunday for allegedly running over a motorcyclist with his Mahindra Thar SUV, resulting in the immediate death of the victim, 40-year-old Bhikshu Lal. The incident, which occurred around midnight on Friday near Sudarshan Park, has sparked outrage as police investigate yet another deadly accident involving a Thar in the capital.
According to police reports, Singh’s SUV collided with Lal’s motorcycle, leaving the biker lifeless in a pool of blood. The Thar then crashed into a nearby truck before coming to a stop. Singh, a resident of Sudarshan Park, fled the scene, abandoning his vehicle, but was later traced and apprehended by authorities.
“The driver is in custody, and legal proceedings are underway,” a senior police officer stated, adding that CCTV footage from the area is being analyzed to reconstruct the sequence of events. Preliminary investigations confirm Singh was driving at the time of the crash.
The incident follows a disturbing trend of accidents involving Thar SUVs in Delhi. Earlier this month, a similar vehicle struck two pedestrians near Chanakyapuri’s 11 Murti landmark, killing one and severely injuring another. The recurrence of such incidents has raised concerns about road safety and reckless driving in the city.
As the investigation continues, police are focusing on determining whether speed or negligence contributed to the tragedy, with the community mourning the loss of Bhikshu Lal.
