Trinamool Congress National General Secretary and Lok Sabha MP Abhishek Banerjee extended birthday greetings to Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on the occasion of his 56th birthday on June 19. Taking to social media platform X, Banerjee wished the senior Congress leader good health, happiness, and continued success in his public life. His message reflected the cordial political outreach often seen among leaders across party lines during significant personal occasions.
In his post, Banerjee wrote, “Warm birthday wishes to Rahul Gandhi Ji. Wishing you good health, happiness and continued success in every endeavour. Keep shining.” The greeting came as leaders from various political parties, supporters, and well-wishers marked Gandhi’s birthday. Rahul Gandhi currently serves as the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, a position he assumed in June 2024 following the general elections.
Born on June 19, 1970, Rahul Gandhi is the son of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and former Congress President Sonia Gandhi. He spent his early years in New Delhi and studied at St. Columba’s School before attending The Doon School in Dehradun. Due to security concerns faced by the Gandhi family following major political developments and tragic incidents, he and his sister, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, were educated through homeschooling for a period.

Rahul Gandhi later pursued higher education in India, the United States, and the United Kingdom. After a brief stint at St. Stephen’s College, he enrolled at Harvard University before transferring to Rollins College in Florida, where he completed his bachelor’s degree in 1994. He subsequently earned an M.Phil. in Development Studies from Trinity College, Cambridge in 1995. Before entering politics, he worked with a management consulting firm in London and later co-founded a technology outsourcing company in Mumbai.
Gandhi formally entered electoral politics in 2004 by contesting the Lok Sabha elections from Amethi in Uttar Pradesh, a constituency previously represented by his father. Over the years, he emerged as a prominent Congress leader, focusing on issues such as rural development, education, social welfare, youth engagement, and women’s empowerment. He was appointed General Secretary of the All India Congress Committee in 2007 and later became Vice President of the party in 2013.
A major milestone in his political career came when he assumed the presidency of the Indian National Congress in 2017. Although he stepped down from the post in 2019 following the Lok Sabha election results, he remained one of the principal opposition voices in national politics. On June 9, 2024, Rahul Gandhi officially became the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, marking his first constitutional position and ending a decade-long vacancy in the post. As he turns 56, messages from political leaders across the spectrum continue to highlight his role in India’s contemporary political landscape.
