External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar will visit Canada next week, less than a month after Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand’s trip to New Delhi. The visit aims to strengthen bilateral relations strained during 2023–24 under former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Jaishankar will attend the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Ontario’s Niagara Region on November 11–12. Discussions will focus on global security, economic resilience, and international cooperation, with Canada hosting as G7 president.
Although India is not a G7 member, it remains a regular invitee, underscoring its growing global influence. The meeting provides a key platform for Jaishankar to engage with counterparts amid renewed diplomatic momentum. Canada’s foreign ministry stated the gathering will address shared challenges and foster stronger multilateral ties. This high-level exchange reflects both nations’ intent to move past previous tensions.
The rapprochement began with Prime Minister Mark Carney’s meeting with Narendra Modi at the June G7 Summit. Both leaders agreed to take “calibrated measures” to restore stability and build a partnership based on mutual respect. Since then, diplomatic activity has surged, including Anand’s October visit and ongoing national security advisor talks. High commissioners were reinstated in August, normalizing full diplomatic presence.

Under Trudeau, relations soured over Canada’s perceived tolerance of pro-Khalistan activities, which India viewed as interference. Carney’s pragmatic leadership has shifted focus to economic and strategic collaboration. Key areas include clean energy, critical minerals, AI, LNG, food security, education, mobility, and supply chains.
Jaishankar’s visit is seen as a crucial step to translate this thaw into concrete outcomes. With both sides prioritizing shared interests, the trip could unlock new avenues for trade, technology, and security partnerships. India and Canada appear committed to turning the page on past disputes.
