The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) recorded its highest-ever single-day ticket booking on September 7, with more than two million tickets booked as demand for train travel increased ahead of the festive season. IRCTC said 20,06,353 tickets were booked through its system that day, surpassing the previous record of 18,40,203 tickets recorded during the festive season last year. The latest figure highlights the growing pressure on India’s online railway reservation system during periods of exceptionally high demand, particularly when advance reservations open for popular travel dates.
IRCTC said the system handled another 19,50,699 bookings on September 8, demonstrating that the elevated demand continued even after the record was established. The surge comes as passengers begin making travel plans for the festive season, traditionally one of the busiest periods for the railway network. With a large proportion of reserved tickets now being booked online, the performance of IRCTC’s digital ticketing infrastructure has become increasingly important for passengers seeking seats during peak travel periods. The corporation said its system was able to handle the record volumes following a series of technological and infrastructure upgrades.
According to an IRCTC official, around 89% of all reserved railway tickets are currently booked online, making the capacity and reliability of the Next Generation e-Ticketing (NGeT) system particularly important during the opening of the Advance Reservation Period. The official said that, based on the current booking pattern, between 8.43% and 14.14% of the day’s bookings are completed during the first hour between 8 am and 9 am. More than 85% of bookings are successfully completed later in the day, indicating that although demand is particularly intense when reservations initially open, the system continues to process a substantial volume of transactions throughout the day.

The first 15 minutes of the booking window, between 8 am and 8:15 am, consistently witness the highest booking volume, according to IRCTC. The company attributed this pattern to peak concurrent demand, when a large number of passengers attempt to access the reservation system simultaneously. Such concentrated traffic has historically placed considerable pressure on online railway booking platforms, particularly during the opening of advance reservations for highly sought-after travel dates. The latest figures indicate the scale of demand that the system is now required to accommodate, with millions of passengers using the platform during peak periods to secure reserved train tickets.
IRCTC said the record booking performance was supported by a series of upgrades and changes to its ticketing infrastructure. These included an overhaul of the NGeT infrastructure and the introduction of a new user interface designed to improve the booking experience. The corporation has also implemented measures aimed at preventing automated bot traffic and reducing unnecessary pressure on the reservation system. These changes are intended to strengthen the platform’s ability to manage large numbers of users accessing it simultaneously, particularly during periods when advance reservations open and demand reaches its highest levels.
