Chinese President Xi Jinping is expected to attend the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi from September 12 to 13, following an invitation from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. While the visit is significant from a diplomatic perspective, attention is also likely to focus on Xi’s official state vehicle, the Hongqi N701, a heavily protected limousine developed for China’s top leadership.

The Hongqi N701 is not a regular production vehicle available to consumers. It is a bespoke state limousine made by Hongqi, the Chinese luxury marque whose name means “Red Flag”. The vehicle has been used during Xi’s overseas engagements, including visits to Egypt, the United States, Russia and Hong Kong. Reports have suggested that only a limited number of N701 vehicles could be produced for official state duties.

The limousine is believed to measure around 5.5 metres in length and is understood to have been developed with a strong focus on occupant protection. Reports have attributed features such as bullet-resistant glass, reinforced armour and specially protected wheels and tyres to the vehicle. Some reports have also claimed that the limousine may have additional systems designed to protect occupants against explosive or chemical threats, although Hongqi has not publicly confirmed detailed specifications or the exact level of protection.

The N701 is also reported to use a powerful petrol engine, with some reports pointing to a 6.0-litre V12 producing around 408 horsepower. However, these technical details have not been officially confirmed by Hongqi. The vehicle is visually distinct from the company’s regular luxury models, featuring a tall vertical grille, prominent chrome elements, a red flag emblem on the bonnet, thick pillars and a formal limousine silhouette.

Hongqi has a long association with China's political leadership and state occasions. Founded in 1958, the marque initially served primarily as a symbol of official transportation before expanding into the wider luxury automobile market. The company now produces sedans, SUVs and electric vehicles, but the N701 remains closely associated with its traditional role in serving China's senior leadership.

If Xi arrives in New Delhi in the Hongqi N701, the limousine will become one of the most visible elements of his BRICS visit. Its presence alongside the diplomatic proceedings is expected to attract particular attention because of its limited production, specialised purpose and association with China's top leadership.
