Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in New Delhi on Friday for a three-day visit to India to attend the BRICS Summit, with his heavily secured presidential aircraft drawing attention. During the visit, Putin is expected to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi for discussions on bilateral trade, investment and energy cooperation.
Putin arrived in India in the early hours of Friday with a high-level Russian delegation. Security arrangements surrounding his visit have been extensive, with Russia using two identical Ilyushin IL-96-300PU aircraft as part of its protection measures. Both aircraft can fly simultaneously, making it difficult to determine which one is carrying the Russian President.
The aircraft used for Putin's presidential travel is a specially modified version of the Russian-made Ilyushin IL-96-300. The plane is often referred to as the “Flying Kremlin” or “Doomsday Plane” because of its role as a highly secure airborne command centre. Operated by Russia’s Special Flight Squadron, it is designed to support the country’s top leadership during emergencies while maintaining secure communications.

The four-engine aircraft, powered by Aviadvigatel PS-90A turbofan engines, has a reported range of around 11,000 kilometres. It is equipped with encrypted communication systems capable of connecting the Russian leadership with military, intelligence and government networks. Satellite links, protected radio and data channels, radar-jamming technology and other defensive systems are also part of the aircraft’s reported security capabilities.
Despite its command-and-security functions, the presidential aircraft also includes extensive luxury facilities. Its reported features include a private presidential suite, bedrooms, bathrooms, a kitchen, dining areas and a large conference room with boardroom-style seating. Gold-plated fittings, woodwork and premium leather and upholstery are also reported to be part of the aircraft’s interior.
