The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved two significant railway infrastructure projects on Wednesday, with a total investment of Rs 2,781 crore aimed at bolstering connectivity in Maharashtra and Gujarat. The initiatives include the doubling of the 141-km Devbhumi Dwarka (Okha)-Kanalus railway line and the construction of third and fourth lines over the 32-km Badlapur-Karjat section, expanding the Indian Railways network by approximately 224 km across four districts. These projects align with the government's ongoing push to modernize rail infrastructure, easing congestion on key corridors and supporting economic activities in western India.
The Devbhumi Dwarka (Okha)-Kanalus doubling project will enhance access to the revered Dwarkadhish temple, a major pilgrimage site, while promoting all-round development in the Saurashtra region of Gujarat. Complementing this, the Badlapur-Karjat upgrades in Maharashtra will improve suburban connectivity in the Mumbai metropolitan area, addressing rising passenger demands and providing seamless links to southern India. Both efforts will benefit nearly 585 villages, serving a population of over 32 lakh people, and are expected to generate substantial employment and self-employment opportunities, fostering self-reliance among local communities.
From a logistical standpoint, the projects will augment freight capacity along vital industrial routes, facilitating the transportation of essential commodities such as coal, salt, containers, cement, and petroleum products. This development is projected to handle an additional 18 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of freight traffic, reducing transit times and operational costs. As part of broader national goals, the initiatives underscore the role of railways in sustainable development, with projections indicating a reduction in oil imports by three crore liters annually and a cut in carbon dioxide emissions by around 16 crore kg.

The approvals reflect Prime Minister Modi's vision for a 'New India' through enhanced mobility and inclusive growth, building on recent cabinet nods for similar high-impact infrastructure. With these projects set to commence soon, they are poised to not only decongest existing networks but also drive regional prosperity, reinforcing India's position as a global manufacturing hub by minimizing logistics expenses and promoting eco-friendly transport solutions.
