India’s largest airline, IndiGo, has appointed former British Airways chief William Walsh as its new Chief Executive Officer, following the recent exit of Pieter Elbers. The leadership change comes at a critical time for the airline as it looks to stabilise operations and restore confidence after a turbulent period.
Walsh, a veteran of the global aviation industry, currently serves as Director General of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and is expected to take over the role later this year after completing his tenure. His appointment is seen as a strategic move to bring experienced leadership to the airline, given his decades-long career that includes leading major international carriers.
The development follows the abrupt resignation of Elbers earlier in March, reportedly after months of scrutiny linked to a major operational crisis. IndiGo had faced widespread disruption in December 2025, cancelling thousands of flights due to issues related to pilot duty and rest regulations, which drew regulatory action and criticism.

In the interim, IndiGo co-founder Rahul Bhatia had taken charge of the airline’s operations while the company searched for a permanent replacement. The airline, which commands over 60% share of India’s domestic aviation market, has been under pressure to improve operational reliability and rebuild its reputation following the crisis.
Walsh’s appointment signals IndiGo’s intent to reinforce its leadership structure and navigate challenges in one of the world’s fastest-growing aviation markets. His experience in managing large-scale airline operations and handling complex industry dynamics is expected to play a key role in steering the carrier through its recovery phase.
The transition also marks a new chapter for IndiGo as it continues to expand both domestically and internationally. Industry observers say the airline’s ability to regain operational stability and sustain growth will depend significantly on how effectively the new leadership addresses recent challenges and executes its long-term strategy.
