She shared the story while accepting the Artist of the Year award at the 2026 VMAs, where she was also the ceremony’s most nominated artist with 13 nominations.

Madonna took the audience back to the first-ever VMAs in 1984, when she performed her hit Like a Virgin. During the performance, one of her stilettos came off, prompting her to move across the stage to retrieve it while continuing the routine. Her dress shifted during the moment, unintentionally exposing part of her undergarments and turning the unexpected mishap into a widely remembered part of MTV history.

More than four decades later, Madonna recalled that she initially believed she had handled the situation well. She said she went backstage feeling proud of how she had recovered from the incident, only to learn that her manager had a very different reaction.
