Apple’s upcoming iPhone 18 Pro Max could introduce a camera feature that has never been offered on an iPhone before, according to a new leak. Chinese tipster Ice Universe has claimed that the larger Pro model will exclusively feature a variable aperture camera system. If accurate, the upgrade could create a clearer distinction between the iPhone 18 Pro Max and the smaller iPhone 18 Pro, giving Apple’s top-end model a significant camera advantage.
The variable aperture feature would represent a change from the fixed-aperture camera systems Apple has traditionally used on its iPhones. With a fixed aperture, the size of the lens opening remains unchanged while taking photographs. A variable aperture system can adjust the opening depending on the shooting conditions, allowing the camera to control how much light reaches the sensor and potentially improving flexibility across different photography scenarios.
The technology could provide benefits for both portrait and low-light photography. By changing the aperture, a camera can offer greater control over depth of field, background blur and image exposure. It remains unclear whether Apple would allow users to manually adjust the aperture or use software to automatically select the appropriate setting. The feature could therefore become an important part of Apple’s effort to distinguish its most expensive iPhone from other models.

Rumours about Apple adopting variable aperture technology have circulated for nearly two years, with earlier reports suggesting that both iPhone 18 Pro models could receive the upgrade. However, reports earlier this year claimed that information linked to Apple supplier Tata Electronics pointed to the iPhone 18 Pro Max using a Sony IMX905 sensor with support for variable aperture technology. The smaller Pro model was reportedly not mentioned, although that alone does not confirm that it will lack the feature.
Apple has previously created hardware differences between its Pro models. A notable example came with the iPhone 15 series, when the Pro Max received a tetraprism telephoto lens that was not offered on the smaller iPhone 15 Pro. The iPhone 18 Pro Max is also rumoured to be slightly larger and heavier than its predecessor, although most other specifications are expected to remain broadly similar between the two Pro models.
The latest information remains unconfirmed, as Apple has not announced the iPhone 18 series or its specifications. Reports currently point to a September launch, with September 8 and September 9 among the dates speculated for Apple’s next major iPhone event. Until the company officially reveals the devices, the variable aperture camera and other reported upgrades should be treated as leaks rather than confirmed features.
