Adani Enterprises Ltd’s subsidiary, Kutch Copper Ltd, plans to integrate 115 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy into its copper refinery operations in Mundra, Gujarat, as part of efforts to reduce carbon emissions, conserve water and improve resource efficiency. The proposed integration is a key element of the company’s sustainability strategy, outlined in its first sustainability report. The plan comes as demand for copper rises due to investments in clean energy, electric mobility, power transmission and industrial development.
Kutch Copper currently operates a copper smelter with an annual production capacity of 500,000 tonnes. The company plans to double this capacity to one million tonnes per annum, which it says would make the facility the world’s largest single-location custom copper smelter. The expansion is intended to increase production while incorporating environmental and sustainability considerations into its business operations.
The company said the planned renewable energy integration would help lower the carbon footprint of its operations and support its long-term decarbonisation goals. Copper is a key material in technologies used for renewable energy generation, electrification and power infrastructure. As countries invest in the energy transition, demand for the metal is expected to remain closely linked to the development of clean energy systems and industrial infrastructure.

Water conservation and pollution control are also central to Kutch Copper’s sustainability plans. According to its report, the refinery relies on nearly 100 per cent desalinated water and follows a zero-liquid-discharge approach to limit its dependence on freshwater. The company also reported treating 99.8 per cent of its sulphur emissions through environmental technologies aimed at controlling industrial pollution.
Beyond its manufacturing activities, Kutch Copper said it is supporting community programmes focused on healthcare, education, livelihoods and social development. The Adani Group has committed $1.2 billion to the project, according to the company. Its plans combine increased copper production with investments in environmental management as India expands its industrial and clean energy infrastructure.
The company’s proposed renewable energy integration comes amid India’s broader ambition to achieve carbon neutrality by 2070. Copper is expected to play an important role in this transition because it is widely used in electricity networks, electric vehicles and renewable energy systems. Kutch Copper aims to expand its output while improving resource efficiency and reducing the environmental impact of its operations.
