Anthropic’s Claude is gaining ground in the consumer artificial intelligence market, emerging as the third-most visited AI service on the web and approaching 1 billion monthly visits, according to the latest consumer AI report from Andreessen Horowitz, also known as a16z. The growth reflects intensifying competition among major AI platforms as companies seek to expand both consumer usage and paid subscriptions.
ChatGPT continues to maintain a substantial lead over its competitors. According to the report, ChatGPT has more than 1 billion monthly active users on mobile and a significantly larger base of paid US subscribers. a16z estimates that ChatGPT has roughly three times as many US consumer paid subscribers as either Claude or Google’s Gemini, giving OpenAI a sizeable advantage in consumer monetisation.
Claude and Gemini are nevertheless competing closely for paid users. Gemini’s subscriber base has expanded after Google shifted existing paid customers to its AI-focused plans, bringing the service closer to Claude in the consumer subscription market. However, the report found that overall AI usage has not translated into widespread paid adoption, with nearly half of US consumers using AI while only about a quarter interact with AI tools daily.

Paid subscriptions remain limited compared with overall usage. As of August, only about 4.5 per cent of US consumers had an active personal paid subscription to ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude. Consumer spending is also concentrated among a relatively small group, with the top 10 per cent of AI spenders accounting for around half of observed expenditure. Coding, productivity and creative applications were identified as major areas driving consumer demand.
The report also pointed to differences between user engagement and subscription growth for Claude. Data from YipitData indicated weaker average daily sessions for Claude during July and August, alongside slower subscriber additions and higher churn in its US e-receipt panel. ChatGPT, meanwhile, regained momentum following several product launches in July and continued to lead usage across most US states, underlining its stronger position even as Claude expands its reach.
