Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Wednesday inaugurated the Abe Memorial Corridor at the Rudraksh Convention Center in Varanasi, dedicating the space to former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and his contribution to India-Japan relations. Abe’s wife, Akie Abe, attended the inauguration ceremony, which highlighted the longstanding cultural and diplomatic links between the two countries.
The corridor has been established to commemorate Abe’s friendship with India and highlight the expanding partnership between the two nations. The inauguration comes as India and Japan seek to deepen cooperation beyond their traditional cultural ties, with Varanasi’s relationship with Kyoto serving as an important symbol of the shared heritage between the two countries.
Before travelling to Varanasi, Adityanath described India-Japan friendship as more than a diplomatic relationship, calling it a “living bridge of trust, development, and the affinity of two ancient cultures”. He credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Abe with taking bilateral ties to new heights, saying the relationship had expanded from areas such as culture and faith towards economic cooperation and shared development.

The chief minister also highlighted the Kashi-Kyoto connection, pointing to the longstanding religious, historical and cultural traditions of Varanasi and Kyoto. He said the relationship between the two cities had supported cooperation in heritage conservation, cultural exchange and sustainable development. Adityanath described the broader India-Japan partnership as extending “from faith to economy” and creating new avenues for shared prosperity.
Adityanath also pointed to the growing economic relationship between Japan and Uttar Pradesh. According to him, the state has signed memoranda of understanding with Japanese companies involving investments of around Rs 90,000 crore. He said these investments would contribute to industrial growth, employment generation and the state's wider development objectives, placing the new memorial corridor alongside the economic dimension of the bilateral relationship.
The inauguration of the Abe Memorial Corridor adds another symbol of the India-Japan partnership in Varanasi, where the Kashi-Kyoto relationship has become an important part of cultural cooperation between the two countries. The memorial is intended to preserve Abe’s association with India while reflecting the broader expansion of ties into heritage, investment, industry and development.
