Indian cricket superstar Virat Kohli is on the verge of shattering one of Sachin Tendulkar’s most celebrated world records. With 27,975 international runs already to his name, Kohli needs just 25 more runs to reach the historic milestone of 28,000 runs. The upcoming ODI series against New Zealand, starting January 11, offers him the perfect stage to achieve the feat.
If Kohli reaches the landmark during the series, he will become the fastest cricketer in history to do so. Tendulkar achieved 28,000 international runs in 644 innings, while Sri Lankan great Kumar Sangakkara took 666 innings. Kohli, however, has reached 27,975 runs in only 623 innings, underlining his extraordinary consistency and dominance across formats.
Ahead of the international assignment, Kohli will also feature for Delhi in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. DDCA President Rohan Jaitley confirmed that Kohli will play Delhi’s match against Railways on January 6 at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. Despite a BCCI directive requiring centrally contracted players to play at least two matches, Kohli has opted to play three to sharpen his form.

The former India captain has already impressed in the domestic tournament, scoring 131 and 77 in his first two outings. During this run, Kohli became the fastest batter to reach 16,000 List A runs, achieving the milestone in just 330 innings—far quicker than Tendulkar, who reached it in 391 innings.
Meanwhile, the Indian ODI squad is set to assemble in Vadodara by January 8, with Kohli possibly arriving early for training. The three-match series begins on January 11, although senior players Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah will be rested due to workload management. Their focus remains on the upcoming home T20 World Cup, starting February 7, while all eyes remain firmly fixed on Kohli’s impending date with history.
