The Egypt Football Association has extended the contract of national men’s team head coach Hossam Hassan following the side’s impressive campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The decision was announced on Wednesday after the Mohamed Salah-led team reached the knockout stage and came close to eliminating defending champions Argentina in a dramatic match that ended in a 3-2 defeat.
Egypt, appearing at only their fourth World Cup and their first since 2018, produced one of their strongest campaigns in the competition. The team took a 2-0 lead against Argentina in the knockout stage before the defending champions completed a remarkable comeback, scoring three goals within 13 minutes to secure victory. The match later became the subject of widespread controversy over several refereeing decisions.
In an official statement, Egypt Football Association president Hany Abo Rida said the board had approved the renewal of contracts for head coach Hossam Hassan and team director Ibrahim Hassan. Local media reports said the new agreement is expected to run until 2030, giving the coaching staff an opportunity to build on the team’s recent progress and prepare for future international competitions.

The 59-year-old Hossam Hassan was appointed Egypt head coach in February 2024 and achieved his first major success by guiding the national team to the semi-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. He had earlier said he had been working with the team without a formal national contract since February this year, making the latest decision a significant show of confidence from the country’s football association.
Egypt also achieved several milestones during the 2026 World Cup under Hassan. The team recorded its first World Cup victory during his tenure with a 3-1 win over New Zealand in Group G. Egypt then defeated Australia on penalties in the Round of 32, securing the country’s first-ever victory in a World Cup knockout match and advancing further in the tournament.
The contract extension comes amid continued debate over Egypt’s controversial elimination by Argentina, with Hassan and several players criticising the officiating after the match. Despite the disappointment of their exit, the football association’s decision signals confidence in the team’s progress under Hassan. The reported agreement until 2030 would allow him to oversee Egypt’s preparations for the next major international cycle.
