Two men were killed after allegedly being attacked with knives near a wedding venue in Tirupati following a dispute linked to a marriage and an ongoing family conflict. One victim died at the scene, while the second succumbed to his injuries after being taken to hospital. The double murder has shocked residents of the temple town, while police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attack.
The victims were identified as 50-year-old Munirathnam Reddy, a resident of Jeevakona, and Manikanta of Subba Reddy Nagar in Tirupati. Police said the incident occurred at around 9:40 pm near a marriage hall on Tiruchanur Road. When officers reached the spot, they found Munirathnam dead, while Manikanta was critically injured.
Manikanta was immediately taken to Sri Venkateswara Ramnarain Ruia Government General Hospital but later died from his injuries. A preliminary investigation suggested that the killings were connected to a family dispute. Police suspect that Sunil, a resident of Jangalapalli village in Yerpedu mandal, carried out the attack along with his brother, sister and another relative. According to sources, Sunil had been living separately from his wife for several years, and tensions over the marital dispute had reportedly continued.
Sources said Sunil’s mother-in-law, Sampurnamma, learned that he was attending a wedding at Padmavathi Kalyana Mandapam on Wednesday night and informed Munirathnam and Manikanta. The two men, who had reportedly helped arrange her daughter’s marriage, confronted Sunil at the venue and questioned him over allegedly abandoning his wife. The argument intensified after Sunil’s relatives allegedly joined the confrontation.
Police said Munirathnam and Manikanta were attacked with knives before the accused fled the scene. Sources said the suspects were traced before they could leave Tirupati and taken into custody for questioning. Tirupati East Circle Inspector Srinivasulu said the exact reason for the clash remained under investigation, though preliminary information pointed to a family dispute as the likely trigger.
