Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni announced on Tuesday that the team has already initiated its rebuilding process for the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) season following a lackluster 2025 campaign.
With CSK languishing at the bottom of the points table and becoming the first team eliminated from playoff contention, Dhoni emphasized a focus on refining the squad for future success.
Speaking at the toss during CSK’s penultimate match against Rajasthan Royals, Dhoni, who led the franchise to five IPL titles, revealed that planning for next season began once playoff hopes faded.

“We have already started that process,” he said, highlighting efforts to strengthen the batting and bowling units. Dhoni had briefly handed over captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad in 2024 but resumed leadership after Gaikwad’s injury.
CSK’s 2025 season has been dismal, with only six points from 12 matches, a stark contrast to their past dominance. Dhoni noted improvements in batting over recent games, with the team focusing on expressive play.
However, he admitted the bowling unit struggled, conceding runs and potentially needing an additional post-powerplay bowler. “We want to continue the momentum from the last couple of games,” he added.
With their playoff exit confirmed, Dhoni said the focus shifted to finding the right team combination and identifying players to target in the next auction. “It’s about sealing your spot for the players going forward,” he remarked, stressing the importance of balancing experience with emerging talent. The team is using the remaining matches, including their final game against Gujarat Titans, to test strategies and allow players to express themselves without pressure.
Dhoni’s comments reflect CSK’s proactive approach to addressing weaknesses, particularly in batting consistency and bowling depth, as they aim to reclaim their status as IPL heavyweights.
