Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Sunday laid the foundation stone of the Shri Guru Ravidas Bani Adhyayan Centre near Dera Sachkhand Ballan, putting the spotlight on the growing political competition between the Aam Aadmi Party and the BJP for influence among the state's Ravidassia community. The project comes less than a year before the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections and as political parties increasingly focus on communities that could play an important role in the electoral contest. The proposed centre will be developed at Naugajan village across approximately 10.5 acres and is estimated to cost around ₹100 crore.
According to the project plan, it will include a research and study facility dedicated to the life, philosophy and teachings of Guru Ravidas. The centre is expected to serve as an institution for studying and preserving the spiritual and social legacy associated with the revered saint. The project also assumes significance because Punjab is preparing to mark the 650th birth anniversary of Guru Ravidas in 2027. The state government has announced year-long programmes to commemorate the occasion, placing the teachings and legacy of Guru Ravidas at the centre of several cultural and public initiatives.
The Ravidassia community has a significant presence in Punjab, particularly in parts of the Doaba region, making outreach to the community an important component of the state's political landscape. Mann has repeatedly linked his government's initiatives related to Guru Ravidas with the broader themes of social equality and human dignity. Speaking recently at a state-level function at Khuralgarh Sahib, he said the life, philosophy and teachings of the Guru continued to guide humanity. The chief minister has used similar occasions to highlight the social message associated with Guru Ravidas and to emphasise the importance of creating institutions that preserve his teachings for future generations.
