Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has reignited debate over Virat Kohli’s decision to retire from Test cricket, revealing details of a personal conversation with the star batter. Ashwin’s remarks have once again drawn attention to Kohli’s unexpected exit from the longest format of the game in 2025.
Kohli had announced his retirement from Test cricket just ahead of India’s series against England in 2025, a move that surprised fans and experts alike. His final appearance in the format came against Australia in January that year, marking the end of a distinguished red-ball career. Despite stepping away from Tests, Kohli continues to represent India in one-day internationals, maintaining his presence in international cricket.
Speaking about their interaction, Ashwin said he had directly told Kohli that he still had cricket left in him and could consider returning to the Test arena. However, he also acknowledged that such a decision would not be easy, given the physical, mental, and professional considerations involved in playing the demanding format.

The comments have sparked fresh discussions within the cricketing community, with many debating whether Kohli’s retirement came prematurely. While there has been no indication from Kohli about a possible comeback, Ashwin’s statement has reopened conversations about the legacy of one of India’s most accomplished Test captains and batters and whether fans have truly seen the last of him in whites.
