Reliance Industries and British aerospace major Rolls-Royce have announced a partnership to develop and manufacture an engine for India's Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) programme, marking a significant step towards strengthening the country's indigenous military aviation capabilities. The companies said on Friday that they will work together to offer capabilities for the design and development of an indigenous combat aircraft engine in India. The proposed collaboration is aimed at supporting the AMCA programme, India's ambitious effort to develop a next-generation fighter aircraft with advanced capabilities for the Indian Air Force.
Under the partnership, Reliance and Rolls-Royce will explore the establishment of a dedicated Aerospace Gas Turbine Complex in India. According to the companies, the facility could serve as a centre of excellence for power and propulsion technology and support the development of capabilities within India's aerospace manufacturing ecosystem. The proposed collaboration will involve exploring the joint development of the AMCA engine in India. Developing a high-performance fighter aircraft engine domestically is considered one of the most challenging aspects of building an indigenous combat aircraft, given the sophisticated technologies required for propulsion, materials, thermal management and manufacturing.
Rolls-Royce brings extensive experience in aerospace propulsion, while Reliance Industries has expanded its presence in India's defence and aerospace sector. The partnership could therefore combine international engine-development expertise with domestic industrial capabilities as India seeks to reduce dependence on foreign suppliers for critical defence technologies. The companies said the partnership aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Atmanirbhar Bharat vision for India's defence ecosystem. The broader objective is to develop greater domestic capability across the fighter aircraft supply chain and eventually deliver an indigenous engine to power India's advanced combat aircraft programme.
