MS Dhoni is likely to travel with the Chennai Super Kings squad for their crucial IPL 2026 clash against the Lucknow Super Giants at the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on Friday. The development has raised speculation over whether the former India captain could finally make his first appearance of the ongoing season after recovering from a calf injury.
CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan confirmed that Dhoni’s travel arrangements for the Lucknow fixture had been made, although there remains no official confirmation regarding his inclusion in the playing XI. The veteran wicketkeeper-batter has yet to feature in IPL 2026 after suffering a knee-related issue during a training session before the tournament began. So far this season, Dhoni has accompanied the team on only two away tours while continuing rehabilitation and fitness work.
Reports suggest the CSK management and players remain hopeful that the 44-year-old could return before the end of the league stage. However, there are also indications that Dhoni is reluctant to disturb the team combination, particularly after Chennai revived their campaign with an improved run of performances. The five-time IPL champions have won three of their last four matches and currently sit sixth in the standings with 10 points from 10 games.

Former India captain Anil Kumble recently stated that Chennai may prefer to maintain continuity in the lineup rather than rush Dhoni back into competitive action. Kumble noted that Dhoni has been actively batting and even practising wicketkeeping during net sessions, something he rarely does extensively during routine training. According to Kumble, the signs indicate that Dhoni is making serious efforts to regain full match fitness ahead of the final phase of the tournament.
Chennai’s recent resurgence has been driven by improved performances from both their batting and bowling units. The team heads into the Lucknow fixture after building momentum through consecutive victories, significantly improving their playoff prospects following a difficult start to the season. A win against Lucknow would further strengthen their push for a top-four finish with matches against Sunrisers Hyderabad and Gujarat Titans still remaining in the league stage.
Dhoni’s potential return has generated significant excitement among fans, given his iconic status within the franchise and Indian cricket. Since leading Chennai to multiple IPL titles over the years, the former captain has remained one of the league’s most influential figures despite gradually reducing his on-field appearances in recent seasons. Whether he ultimately features against Lucknow or later in the campaign, his presence around the squad is expected to provide a major boost to CSK during the decisive closing stages of IPL 2026.
