Chennai Super Kings batter Urvil Patel credited veteran wicketkeeper-batter MS Dhoni for helping him overcome self-doubt and produce a sensational record-equalling half-century against Lucknow Super Giants in IPL 2026. Playing at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Sunday, the explosive right-hander smashed 65 runs off just 23 deliveries, including eight sixes, as Chennai Super Kings mounted a dominant chase. His 13-ball fifty matched the fastest half-century in IPL history and immediately became one of the standout performances of the season.

Patel’s innings was remarkable not only for its speed but also for the manner in which he attacked from the outset. The young batter became the first player in IPL history to hit six sixes within the opening eight balls of an innings, helping Chennai register a massive score during the powerplay. The aggressive knock came after Patel had struggled to convert promising starts earlier in the tournament, prompting him to seek guidance from Dhoni, who has been sidelined this season due to a calf injury.

Speaking after the match, Patel revealed that a conversation with Dhoni in the dressing room proved crucial in changing his mindset. According to the batter, the former Chennai Super Kings captain told him that there was no issue with his ability and that the only obstacle was mental clarity. Dhoni advised him to remain calm, trust his instincts, and focus on hitting the right ball to the right areas. Patel said the reassurance removed doubts from his mind and allowed him to play freely during the innings against Lucknow.

The innings also carried strong emotional significance for the Mehsana-born cricketer, as it marked his maiden IPL fifty. Patel dedicated the milestone to his father, who, he said, had consistently encouraged him to continue playing fearlessly despite his earlier dismissals. He explained that his father repeatedly told him results did not matter as long as he continued to play with confidence and intent. After reaching the landmark, Patel celebrated by displaying a handwritten note dedicated to his father and expressing gratitude to his family deity for the achievement.

Patel further disclosed that Chennai Super Kings skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad also played a role in helping him settle quickly at the crease. Gaikwad reportedly informed him that the wicket was good for batting despite offering slightly low bounce. Patel said that after connecting his first six cleanly, he became convinced the conditions suited attacking strokeplay and decided to capitalize fully whenever the ball arrived in his hitting zone. He added that his preparation has been centered around fearless batting and extensive six-hitting practice rather than chasing records.

Although Patel was aware of the IPL record for the fastest fifty, he insisted that his primary focus remained on scoring his first major innings in the competition. The batter acknowledged that he knew about the existing benchmark associated with KL Rahul but maintained that he was not thinking about breaking records while batting. Instead, he concentrated on building a meaningful innings for his team, a mindset that ultimately resulted in one of the most explosive knocks of the IPL 2026 season.
