A KFC outlet in Mangaluru came under the scrutiny of Karnataka food safety officials after a customer complained that chicken ordered from the restaurant was allegedly stale and had a foul smell. The complaint was reportedly made after the customer ordered Chicken Peri Peri Legs online. Acting on the complaint, Food Safety Department officials conducted an inspection at the outlet and examined food storage and preparation areas.

Officials inspected the kitchen, storeroom, cold storage facilities, deep freezer and stock of fried chicken during the inspection. Authorities also sealed the outlet's godown and collected chicken samples for laboratory analysis. Officials said further action would be decided after the laboratory report establishes the condition and safety of the samples collected from the premises.

The inspection in Mangaluru comes amid continued food safety checks at restaurants, hotels and other establishments across Karnataka. In Mysuru city and district, officials seized 9 kg of expired chicken from Rio Meridian Hotel, 68 kg of meat from Grand Mercure Hotel and 4 kg of mushrooms from Q Star Hotel. Authorities said further investigation into those findings is underway.

The Health Department also inspected three resorts in Mysuru and Nanjangud taluks as part of separate food safety checks. Officials issued three notices and collected five food samples, including two legal samples and three survey samples. During the inspections, 16 kg of expired and perishable food items were seized and discarded, according to the department.

Food safety officials have also recently inspected a private hospital in Bengaluru, where expired ingredients and other food items were reportedly found in the kitchen. The inspection uncovered expired rava, icing sugar, maida, bakery products, mixture and pani puri packets, along with other food products and ingredients. Officials also recovered stale bread and several stored food items that were considered unsuitable for use.

Several luxury hotels and resorts in Bengaluru have also come under inspection in recent food safety checks. Officials reported finding expired milk and rotten meat at establishments including Four Seasons and Shangri-La, following which legal proceedings were initiated. The latest Mangaluru inspection is part of the wider effort by Karnataka authorities to check food storage, hygiene and compliance with prescribed safety standards.
