The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the West Bengal Police has begun an inquiry into a complaint filed by social activist Rajiv Sarkar, who has alleged a threat to his life from Trinamool Congress General Secretary and Lok Sabha member Abhishek Banerjee. Sarkar submitted the complaint at the Bidhannagar Cyber Crime Police Station in North 24 Parganas district, expressing fears that he could be targeted following his earlier complaint in a hate speech case involving the Trinamool Congress leader.

Sarkar was the first complainant in the hate speech case against Abhishek Banerjee, who has been accused of making alleged inflammatory remarks and issuing threats during a campaign rally ahead of the recently concluded Assembly elections. Banerjee has already appeared before CID investigators twice in connection with the matter and has also provided voice samples before a court in Bidhannagar as part of the ongoing investigation.

In his complaint, Sarkar claimed that he became a target after filing the initial case and alleged that he feared being falsely implicated or harmed. He referred to a recent press conference held by Banerjee after the demolition of a Trinamool Congress office in Amtala, Diamond Harbour, where he alleged that the MP’s remarks carried a threatening tone. Sarkar said these developments increased his concerns regarding his personal safety.

Sarkar also cited statements made by former Trinamool Congress legislator Madan Mitra in a Facebook Live video as part of his argument regarding the alleged threat. He claimed that Mitra’s remarks about Banerjee’s conduct strengthened his apprehensions. However, the allegations made by Sarkar and references to statements by political figures remain part of the complaint and are subject to investigation by authorities.

The controversy comes amid political tensions surrounding allegations and counter-allegations involving leaders of the Trinamool Congress. Abhishek Banerjee has denied allegations made against him and has already issued a ₹10 crore defamation notice to Madan Mitra over claims made on social media. The CID investigation will now examine the details mentioned in Sarkar’s complaint and determine the next course of action.
