The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly preparing to introduce stricter guidelines in the Indian Premier League (IPL) to regulate the presence of players’ partners, amid concerns over what officials have described as a growing “girlfriend culture” during the 2026 season.
According to reports, several high-profile players, including Hardik Pandya, Ishan Kishan, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Arshdeep Singh, have been seen travelling with their partners on team buses and staying in official team hotels. The board is said to be concerned about the increasing visibility and logistical involvement of such companions during the tournament.
Officials believe that the situation could lead to operational and reputational challenges if not addressed promptly. Reports suggest instances where team movements were delayed due to the presence of partners, raising concerns about discipline and adherence to team protocols during a high-intensity tournament.

Another key concern flagged by the board relates to the social media presence of some partners, many of whom are influencers. Authorities are reportedly wary of potential risks, including the inadvertent sharing of sensitive information or past associations with betting platforms, which could impact the integrity of the sport.
A senior official indicated that current BCCI policies only permit wives and immediate family members under defined conditions, and there is no formal provision recognising “official girlfriends". The board is also examining how certain permissions may have been granted, including the role of Anti-Corruption Unit officials in allowing access in some cases.
The BCCI is expected to deliberate on the matter in its upcoming meetings and may implement uniform regulations applicable to both IPL franchises and the Indian national team during international tours. The proposed measures aim to ensure stricter compliance with travel and accommodation protocols while maintaining the professional environment of the sport.
