Australian cricket fans were left reeling as veteran fast bowler Mitchell Starc announced his retirement from T20 international cricket, prioritising his Test and ODI career. The 35-year-old pace maestro, known for his devastating full-length deliveries, is stepping away from the shortest format to ensure peak performance in major upcoming campaigns.
Starc, who claimed 79 wickets in 65 T20Is, was notably absent from Australia’s T20 squad for the upcoming three-match series against New Zealand, starting October 1. His decision comes as he gears up for a gruelling schedule, including the Ashes series against England in November 2025 and a Test tour of India in 2026, with an eye on the 2027 ODI World Cup.
“I’ve cherished every moment of T20 cricket for Australia, especially our 2021 World Cup triumph—it was an unforgettable ride with an amazing group,” Starc said. “But retiring from T20Is gives me the best chance to stay fit and sharp for Test and ODI challenges ahead.”

Starc’s absence joins that of Test captain Pat Cummins, who is resting after battling lower back issues since the recent Caribbean Test series. The move allows Australia’s bowling unit to prepare younger talent for the 2026 T20 World Cup.
As Australia’s second-highest T20I wicket-taker, Starc’s lethal bowling has been a game-changer, earning praise from selection chairman George Bailey. “Mitch’s T20 career has been phenomenal, especially his role in our 2021 World Cup win. His ability to rip through batting lineups is unmatched,” Bailey said. “We’ll celebrate his T20 legacy in due time, but it’s exciting to see his focus on Tests and ODIs for years to come.”
With Starc’s sights set on extending his dominance in the longer formats, fans are eager to see how this shift reshapes Australia’s cricketing future. Will this gamble pay off in Ashes glory and beyond? Only time will tell.
