Following India’s strong performance in the 2026 T20 World Cup, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is already turning its attention to the upcoming 2027 ICC ODI World Cup, with top players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma expected to be central to the team’s plans. The board is exploring strategies to ensure a balanced squad that can compete at the highest level across formats.
BCCI sources said that the board is evaluating the current roster and looking at a mix of experience and youth to strengthen India’s chances in the 50-over tournament. Kohli and Sharma, both veteran batsmen with decades of international experience, are expected to play key leadership and mentoring roles, guiding younger talent while remaining central to India’s batting lineup.
The T20 World Cup victory has boosted confidence within the team and the administration, with officials highlighting the importance of maintaining momentum heading into the ODI format. “Our immediate focus is consolidating the core of experienced players while grooming young stars who can handle the pressures of the World Cup,” a senior BCCI official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup will include scheduling more bilateral and tri-series games, along with domestic tournaments to fine-tune skills and strategies. Special emphasis is being placed on building depth in the fast-bowling department and strengthening middle-order batting, areas identified as crucial for World Cup success in the 50-over format.
Kohli and Sharma’s fitness and form will be closely monitored over the next year, with the BCCI planning tailored training camps and workload management to keep them match-ready for the tournament. Cricket analysts note that India’s reliance on these senior players will need to be balanced carefully to avoid burnout while maximizing their impact on the field.
With the ODI World Cup approaching, the BCCI is also exploring opportunities for enhanced fan engagement, sponsorship initiatives, and media promotions to capitalize on India’s growing cricketing profile. Officials hope that combining seasoned leadership with emerging talent will allow India to mount a serious challenge for the 2027 title and sustain its dominance in international cricket.
