Punjab Kings head coach Ricky Ponting has set an ambitious goal for the IPL 2025 season: not just to clinch the franchise’s elusive maiden title but to transform Punjab Kings into the greatest team in its history. With Ponting at the helm and IPL 2024-winning captain Shreyas Iyer leading the side, the franchise is eyeing a dramatic turnaround as they kick off their campaign against Gujarat Titans on March 25 in Ahmedabad.
“The vision is to win the IPL,” Ponting declared in a franchise statement. “I told the team on day one in Dharamshala that we’re on a journey to become the greatest Punjab Kings side ever. It won’t happen overnight, but that’s what we’re building.” The Australian cricket legend stressed cultivating a winning mindset, saying, “If the opposition wants to beat us, it should feel like they’re taking something from us—I won’t let that happen.”
Ponting spotlighted uncapped Indian talents Priyansh Arya, Suryansh Shedge, and Musheer Khan as potential game-changers. “Arya’s a special opener, Shedge has impressed in training, and Khan brings infectious energy,” he noted. He also emphasized the role of senior players, particularly overseas stars, in setting the tone. “The young Indian players look up to them. I’ve empowered the overseas guys to lead by example.”
With a blend of seasoned leadership and emerging talent, Ponting’s Punjab Kings are poised to shed their underperforming past and chase glory in what promises to be a transformative season.
