Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to virtually inaugurate the 72nd National Volleyball Tournament on January 4 at noon from Dr. Sampooranand Sports Stadium in Varanasi, his parliamentary constituency. Running from January 4 to 11, the event under the ‘Khelo India’ initiative marks Purvanchal's first hosting of such a prestigious championship, uniting over 1,000 players from 73 men’s and women’s teams across states and institutions. This gathering promises fierce competition and showcases India’s volleyball talent on a national stage.
The tournament underscores Varanasi’s evolving role as a sports and cultural epicenter, bolstered by enhanced infrastructure and government focus on youth athletics. Organizers, including Varanasi Mayor Ashok Kumar Tiwari and UP Deputy CM Brijesh Pathak—president of the Volleyball Association—personally invited PM Modi in New Delhi, receiving his enthusiastic endorsement as a youth inspiration platform. UP CM Yogi Adityanath will attend in person to motivate participants.
Cultural mascots ‘Nandu’—inspired by Nandi—and Ganga dolphin ‘Neera’ infuse local flavor, symbolizing the region’s heritage. To uphold integrity, random anti-doping tests will ensure fair play throughout the week-long event. The championship aims to elevate volleyball standards nationwide while cementing a lasting legacy for sports development in eastern Uttar Pradesh.
