Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and former India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar on Thursday, September 10, 2026, launched the inaugural Guwahati International Marathon in Guwahati. The running event is scheduled to be held on February 7, 2027, and is expected to attract around 12,000 participants, including athletes from different parts of the world. The launch marked the beginning of preparations for what organisers intend to establish as a major international sporting event in the city.

The marathon is expected to bring together professional athletes, recreational runners and members of the public, creating an opportunity for participants with different levels of experience to take part in the event. The involvement of Gavaskar, one of India’s most prominent former cricketers, added visibility to the launch. At the launch ceremony, Gavaskar presented the first registration jersey number to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The presentation formally marked the opening of registrations and served as a symbolic start to the preparations for the inaugural edition. The organisers are expected to continue registration and logistical arrangements ahead of the February event.
