A First Information Report (FIR) has been filed against Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra in Raipur, Chhattisgarh, over her alleged inflammatory remarks targeting Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The case, registered on Saturday at Mana police station, follows a complaint by local resident Gopal Samanto, who claimed Moitra’s statements were “objectionable” and posed a threat to communal harmony.
The controversy erupted after Moitra, while speaking to reporters in West Bengal’s Nadia district on Thursday during an event, allegedly remarked that if Amit Shah fails to curb infiltration from Bangladesh, “the first thing you should do is cut Amit Shah’s head and put it on your table.” The statement, captured in a video that has not been independently verified by PTI, triggered widespread backlash for its provocative nature. Moitra also accused the Union government of neglecting its border security responsibilities, escalating the political row.
The FIR invokes sections 196 and 197 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), charging Moitra with promoting enmity between groups on grounds of religion, race, or language, and making assertions prejudicial to national integration. Samanto’s complaint highlighted the significant Bangladeshi refugee population settled in Raipur’s Mana Camp since 1971, alleging that Moitra’s remarks could incite fear and provoke hostility from other communities against them.

Chhattisgarh police are investigating the authenticity of the video and the context of Moitra’s statement. The TMC MP, known for her outspoken criticism of the central government, has not publicly responded to the FIR but has previously defended her stance on border security issues. The case adds to the ongoing tensions between the TMC and the BJP, with the latter condemning Moitra’s remarks as reckless and divisive.
Local BJP leaders have seized the opportunity to criticize the TMC, accusing Moitra of crossing ethical boundaries in political discourse. “Such statements are unacceptable and threaten the fabric of our society,” a senior BJP leader in Raipur stated, demanding a public apology. Meanwhile, TMC supporters argue that Moitra’s comments were taken out of context to malign her and distract from the central government’s alleged failures in managing cross-border infiltration.
The incident has reignited debates over free speech, political rhetoric, and communal sensitivities, particularly in areas like Mana Camp with historical refugee settlements. Authorities have urged calm while the investigation proceeds, with the potential for further legal repercussions depending on the findings. As the controversy unfolds, it underscores the deepening political polarization in India, with Moitra’s remarks adding fuel to an already charged atmosphere.
