Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has voiced strong concerns over the Indian judicial system being overwhelmed by "frivolous" and "politically motivated" cases, where the legal process itself becomes a form of punishment. Speaking to mediapersons in Mumbai on Saturday, Tharoor highlighted the strain on the judiciary, questioning whether judges' time is being wasted on cases pursued for political reasons rather than on matters of substance.
His remarks followed a Supreme Court suggestion that a BJP leader consider withdrawing a defamation case against him. The case stemmed from a reference in Tharoor’s book, which quoted a 2011 article citing a statement by an RSS figure, later associated with the BJP. Tharoor clarified, “I wasn’t targeting anyone. I was quoting a quote.” He noted the case was filed six years after the publication, and the Supreme Court’s response was unsurprising.
On a separate note, Tharoor declined to comment on Rahul Gandhi’s endorsement of US President Donald Trump’s “dead economy” remark about India, stating that Gandhi had his “own reasons.” He emphasized the importance of India’s strategic and economic ties with the US, citing $90 billion in exports and the need to maintain strong bilateral relations.
