Police in Sundargarh, Odisha, have arrested six individuals in connection with the communal tension that erupted earlier this week in the Regent Market area. The clash, which took place on Thursday over alleged "suspicious food items," left 12 people injured, including a few police personnel, and prompted a heavy security response.
Sundargarh SDPO Nirmal Mohapatra confirmed the arrests on Saturday, adding that the search for other individuals identified on CCTV or by witnesses during the stone-pelting incident is ongoing. The police have vowed to take strict action against anyone found instigating violence.
Following the unrest, the district administration had imposed prohibitory orders and enforced an internet blackout to prevent further escalation. By Friday evening, most restrictions were lifted, and on Saturday, markets, shops, and schools reopened, signaling a gradual return to normalcy.

Despite the apparent calm, security forces remain on high alert. Approximately 20 police platoons have been deployed at strategic points across Sundargarh to ensure no further clashes occur. Authorities continue to monitor sensitive areas closely to prevent any resurgence of tension.
Mohapatra appealed to residents to remain vigilant and avoid spreading rumors that could inflame communal sentiments. “The situation is under control now, but we are maintaining a strict watch. Everyone must cooperate with law enforcement as the investigation continues,” he stated.
Officials have also intensified efforts to trace and apprehend all other individuals involved in the unrest, emphasizing that communal harmony and public safety are the administration’s top priorities in the district.
