A two-and-a-half-year-old boy allegedly suffered for several hours after a syringe needle broke during an anti-rabies injection and remained lodged inside his body. The child was reportedly sent home from a civic hospital before undergoing surgery at another medical facility to remove the broken needle.

The boy, identified as Kavesh, lives with his parents, Suryabhan and Kajal, in Kalyan East near Mumbai. He was accidentally bitten by the family’s pet dog while playing on Sunday, following which his parents took him to Rukminibai Hospital for medical attention and anti-rabies treatment.

Rukminibai Hospital is operated by the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation. During the child’s treatment, a syringe needle allegedly broke while an injection was being administered and became embedded in his body. According to the family, the medical staff did not recognise or properly address what had happened before sending the toddler home.

Kavesh’s mother alleged that a doctor refused to accept that the needle was still inside her son. She said the doctor maintained that it had fallen on the floor, despite the family’s concerns about the toddler’s condition. The alleged refusal delayed further treatment and caused the child to remain in pain for hours.

The family subsequently took Kavesh to another hospital, where doctors reportedly confirmed that the broken needle remained lodged inside him. The toddler then underwent surgery to have it removed. The incident turned what began as routine treatment following a dog bite into an additional medical emergency for the child and his parents.

The allegations raise serious questions about injection safety, post-procedure examination and the response provided to the family at the municipal hospital. Based on the information provided, no formal response from Rukminibai Hospital or the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation was immediately available. Further inquiry would be required to establish how the needle broke and whether established medical protocols were followed.
