Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Friday launched a sharp political attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), branding it the “Bhrasht Janata Party.” He alleged that BJP’s so-called double-engine governments in several states have caused widespread suffering through corruption, arrogance of power, and systemic neglect.
In a social media post written in Hindi, Gandhi claimed that corruption and abuse of authority have spread across BJP governance from the top down. He said the lives of the poor, labourers, and the middle class are treated as mere statistics under the BJP, while a system of extortion operates in the name of development.
Citing specific incidents, Gandhi referred to the murder of Ankita Bhandari in Uttarakhand, questioning whether influential individuals were being shielded by those in power. He also recalled the Unnao rape case in Uttar Pradesh, alleging that the victim’s struggle for justice exposed how criminals were protected due to political influence.

The Congress leader further highlighted deaths linked to contaminated drinking water in Indore and raised concerns about polluted water supplies in states such as Gujarat, Haryana, and Delhi. He claimed that governance failures have created widespread fear of disease and reflected a lack of accountability in public administration.
Gandhi also accused the BJP of enabling environmental destruction, alleging that natural resources—from the Aravalli range in Rajasthan to other regions—are being exploited for the benefit of a few wealthy interests. He said forests are being destroyed, mountains cut down, and citizens left to deal with pollution, dust, and ecological disasters.
Referring to incidents such as child deaths linked to contaminated cough syrup, infrastructure collapses, and train accidents, Gandhi said these were consequences of corruption rather than mere negligence. Concluding his attack, he alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “double-engine” model benefits only billionaires, while for ordinary Indians it represents “the speed of destruction, not development.”
