The political storm in the Delhi Assembly escalated as AAP leaders hit back at the BJP over what they called a deliberate misrepresentation of Leader of the Opposition Atishi’s statement about Guru Tegh Bahadur. BJP ministers had demanded Atishi’s disqualification, claiming she insulted the Guru, a charge AAP strongly refutes.
Atishi, who was absent from the House on Thursday, said the BJP had misused her words and attached misleading subtitles to a video, wrongly linking it to the 350th anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur’s martyrdom. She clarified that the clip was from a later discussion and criticized the BJP for insulting the Sikh community and the Gurus.
Other senior AAP leaders joined the attack. MP Sanjay Singh called the BJP the “Bharatiya Jhootha Party,” accusing it of persecuting Sikhs and now dishonoring the Gurus. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said the BJP’s actions were part of its longstanding anti-Sikh and anti-Punjab politics, demanding an apology to the community.

AAP’s Delhi convenor Saurabh Bhardwaj argued the controversy was a tactic to divert attention from Delhi CM Rekha Gupta’s repeated blunders, including a gaffe about Shaheed Bhagat Singh. He highlighted the BJP leadership’s incompetence in handling Assembly proceedings and media interactions.
Meanwhile, Gopal Rai emphasized that releasing the full video would clarify Atishi’s actual statements. He noted that AAP always supports claims with evidence, referencing the immediate release of CM Gupta’s gaffe video regarding Bhagat Singh to counter BJP narratives.
AAP leaders warned that the BJP’s attempt to create a religious controversy would not succeed and reaffirmed their demand for the full video release to set the record straight. They called on the BJP to stop manipulating facts and to respect the sentiments of the Sikh community.
