The Delhi Assembly witnessed chaos on the third day of its Winter Session after BJP ministers demanded the cancellation of AAP Leader of Opposition Atishi’s assembly membership. The ministers alleged that Atishi made “insulting and abusive” remarks about Sikh Guru Tegh Bahadur during a discussion in the House on Tuesday, prompting the Speaker to adjourn the session until Thursday.
Following the uproar, Delhi ministers Kapil Mishra, Parvesh Verma, Manjinder Singh Sirsa, Ravinder Indraj, and Chief Whip Abhay Verma met Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta and formally submitted a letter demanding Atishi’s ouster. The AAP leader was absent during Wednesday’s proceedings, as she had reportedly traveled to Goa.
The controversy erupted during a debate on the Lieutenant-Governor’s address, when Atishi raised concerns about pollution in Delhi. Speaker Gupta informed her that pollution would be discussed on Wednesday. Atishi responded by highlighting citizens’ struggles to breathe, while referencing dogs and invoking a comparison with respect for the Guru, which BJP leaders later termed “abusive” and “vulgar” language.

BJP leaders criticized Atishi’s remarks as disrespectful toward Sikh religious sentiments. Parvesh Verma stated, “Every citizen of the country is hurt by Atishi’s statement. The Assembly Speaker has received a copy of her remarks, which are indecent and shameful.” He emphasized that her comments were inappropriate during a special discussion honoring the martyrdom of Guru Tegh Bahadur.
Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa went further, urging the filing of a criminal case against Atishi and claiming her assembly membership should be revoked immediately. “The place for someone insulting Guru Tegh Bahadur is not this House, but Tihar Jail,” he said, asserting that no assembly member since Independence had used such language toward a religious figure.
The BJP’s complaint has intensified political tensions in Delhi, with the Assembly set to resume its Winter Session on Thursday. Observers say the issue could escalate into a larger debate over decorum in legislative proceedings and the protection of religious sentiments within political discourse.
