Maharashtra is witnessing a political storm after state BJP president Ravindra Chavan made controversial remarks about late former Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh during a rally in Latur. Addressing BJP booth presidents and workers, Chavan claimed the Congress leader’s legacy “will be wiped out from this city,” sparking immediate backlash.
The remarks drew sharp criticism from Deshmukh’s family and Congress leaders. Amit Deshmukh, Congress MLA and son of the late CM, described the statement as “extremely unfortunate and distressing,” accusing the BJP of disrespecting a leader who dedicated decades to Maharashtra. Actor Riteish Deshmukh said his father’s legacy is “etched in the hearts” of the people and cannot be erased by mere words.
Congress leaders staged protests in Latur demanding an unconditional apology, arguing that even in the heat of elections, insulting deceased leaders violates the cultural ethos of Maharashtra. State Congress General Secretary Sachin Sawant criticised the BJP for displaying “hatred and contempt,” invoking Hindu philosophy to highlight respect for leaders after death.

Facing mounting public anger, Ravindra Chavan issued a clarification and personal apology, stating his comments targeted the political influence of Congress in Latur rather than Vilasrao Deshmukh personally. He added, “If the feelings of his son, who is a good friend of mine, are hurt, I apologise to him. The statement should not be seen through a political lens.”
The controversy comes just ahead of municipal corporation elections in 29 cities, including Mumbai, Pune, and Latur, scheduled for January 15, 2026. Political analysts suggest the remarks could backfire on the BJP, as the “Latur pride” and sympathy factor may consolidate support for the Congress in the region.
Observers note that the episode highlights the high-stakes rhetoric in Maharashtra’s local politics, where legacy, public sentiment, and election strategy intersect. The apology may calm tensions temporarily, but the incident underscores the sensitivity around revered political figures in the state.
