Punjab government employees are preparing to take their long-running agitation over pending Dearness Allowance (DA) arrears into the political arena ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections. Employee unions are planning to activate district-level political wings and hold discussions on a collective electoral strategy, marking a shift from their earlier focus on protests and negotiations with the state government.
Union leader Sukhchain Singh Khaira said employees would hold discussions at the district level and could collectively decide their voting strategy. The proposed move would see employee groups use the DA dispute as a political issue and potentially organise activities across districts during the run-up to the elections. However, the union has not announced any formal political alignment with a particular party.
The planned mobilisation could create an additional political challenge for the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) if the employee movement develops into a sustained campaign. Political analyst Ashutosh Kumar said an organised district-level movement centred on the DA dispute could have electoral implications, particularly if employee groups begin actively campaigning around the issue. The development could also give Opposition parties an opportunity to engage with a sizeable employee constituency.

The proposed political push comes alongside an intensified protest programme. Employees have announced a maha rally in Sangrur on October 10 and have warned of a possible maha bandh if their demands remain unresolved. Sangrur also carries political significance in Punjab and is associated with the political base of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, adding importance to the planned gathering.
The dispute centres on the implementation of DA and related arrears, with the issue also linked to an ongoing legal battle. Khaira claimed that the Punjab and Haryana High Court had given the state government three dates to comply with its directions and questioned the government's position on implementation. He also said the court had sought an update on proceedings before the Supreme Court.
Employee groups have criticised recent government engagements, arguing that their central demand over DA remains unresolved. The proposed district-level political activity now raises the possibility of the agitation developing beyond conventional demonstrations and negotiations. Whether the union can turn its announcement into a sustained statewide campaign could determine how significantly the DA dispute features in Punjab's political discourse ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.
